Go for Gary?
Hell, why not? Sheffield is clearing waivers today which means the Tigers will be eating up the remaining $14 million on his contract. That means he’ll likely sign with a team for $400k, the league minimum. We all know the Giants lack pop in their lineup, pretty apparent with Molina batting cleanup, so why not give it a shot at such a cheap price? Obviously Shef is getting old and wouldn’t be an everyday player, but he could pinch-hit in key situations and be a nice bench player for the days Lewis or Rowand need off. He’s a career .311 with runners in scoring position and let’s not forget that he has 499 career homeruns. He’ll probably end up as a DH in the AL, but he could still contribute and would be a fun addition to a weak offensive Giants club.

All I have to say is thank god for the mets. At this point Sheffield would have a hard time playing outfield for a slow pitch softball league. If we were going to sign another over the hill player we might as well of kept Dave Roberts. Now we do not have to worry since the Mets were the team to make the mistake not the Giants. Lets keep the youth movement going and keep our backup outfielders as guys who can help the Giants in the future……
Signing Renteria and not going after Cabrera at short was definitely a move by the Giants to keep the youth movement going. Right…And even though Johnson has looked good this spring, i dont think he’s in his 20’s. And bringing back Aurilia to come off the bench and add pop to the lineup? Come on…Ya in general they’re moving in the right direction with youth and speed but they’re still signing veterans that they think can contribute, which is something Shef could do. And for the $400k it would have cost them, I’d be much more willing to buy a ticket to watch him hit #500 at AT&T and swing out of his shoes everytime he’s at the plate than watch Martinez pitch.
If I had my say I dont think I would have gone after either shortstop. You got me on the Aurilla signing, they do need someone over 21 to buy the beer or atleast be able to use his AARP card for discounts. Aurillia I think is also around as a hold over from the winning days to mentor the younger players just like Will Clark is now around the team. With that I would sign Clark to a contract right now over both Shef and Aurillia. The Johnson signing was just a matter of they did not get any production out of their 5th starter last season, something like 5 wins so he has to be an improvement. I think it also had to do with being able to say they have 3 Cy youngs on the team. Oh and Shef in a giants uniform would never happen since he is still pissed Bonds stole his personal Chef…..I will put it out there to you right now that 5 dollars says Aurillia has more hits than Shef this year.
